Gordon Smith, a medical student, joined 2A&SH at Singapore in 1941. A 2nd Lt and platoon commander in David Boyle's D Company, he was very much at the sharp end, participating in several battles in Malaya including Sumpitan & Slim River. Wounded and on the run for three weeks, he was eventually captured and inprisoned in Pudu Gaol, Kuala Lumpur and in October 1942 sent to Thailand. With the aid of a microscope he was able to do good work in POW camp hospitals at Tamarkan, Kanchanaburi and Nakorn Pathom. He ended the war at Nakorn Nyok.
Gordon, one of the last surviving veterans of the 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, lives today in the South of France. He will be attending the RFH Conference.
